How does the volunteer program work?

Local facilities and limitations

The Reserve has a well-organized set of self-guided and longer trails. The Reserve buildings and other installations have been designed to match with the local natural landscape and ecological needs, thus the whole place conserves an atmosphere that is inspiring for an evening of reading, writing and time for solitude. Some books and souvenirs are available at Maquipucuna´s small shop, book exchange is also encouraged. Regarding the natural distraction options, the Reserve's river is perfect for an early morning swim. Hikes are diverse for bird or insect watching, photography and star watching at night.

The Reserve has a gas electricity generator which is available for 4 hours a day (from 6:00pm to 10:00pm), but we do not recommend to connect delicate electronic instruments such as computers, for voltage variations are possible. There are no telephones or televisions at the reserve.

The cell phone signal is not received at the Reserve because it is surrounded by mountains. Nevertheless, phone facilities are found in the village of Sta.Marianita.

The Maquipucuna Reserve is considered generally safe and we have not had any security problems since its opening. Guards are on duty every night and provide security for all volunteers, tourists and staff.
