Our work
Our Commitment
We are committed to finding conservation and sustainable development solutions for two of the top 5 biodiversity hotspots on the planet which are threatened with degradation from a growing human population and unsustainable land uses – the Chocó and Tropical Andean ecosystems.
Maquipucuna’s primary role in this process is to be a facilitator and enabler of economic development in this poor and marginalized region by bringing it actively into the global development process by:
- Building human capital (i.e. training, environmental education, medical clinics, establishing day care facilities, and increasing gender equity);
- Establishing social capital (i.e. networks, community-based conservation and development, support and creation of local micro-enterprises and producers associations, beyond fair trade agreements, and an international environmental education);
- Recognizing and utilizing natural capital (i.e. ecotourism, Chocó Andes identification of origin, shade-grown organic coffee and cacao, native bamboo, tissue culture of endangered orchids and bromeliads, conservation carbon offsets), and;
- Providing financial capital (investments, infrastructure, micro-financing).
