Unfortunately, not all carbon credits are biodiversity-friendly or supportive of local people. For example, some carbon credits actually fund oil palm plantations even though the plantations are a major cause of deforestation, biodiversity loss and the cycle of grinding poverty.

Maqui carbon credits and the Tree for Life program contributions go directly towards protecting rainforests, biodiversity and poor local smallholders in one of the most species-rich hotspots on the planet. Indeed, the carbon credit and tree adoption programs lift forest communities above the poverty line and fund healthcare, education and basic needs. All of this makes our carbon credits notably different from many of the big profit-driven sellers of carbon offsets.

• Global Warming potentials for the greenhouse gases regulated under the Kyoto Protocol under a 100 year timeframe are as follows

  Methane has a GWP of 21
  Nitrous oxide has a GWP of 310
  Halocarbons (HFC) has a GWP of 140 to 11,700
  Sulphur Hexafluoride has a GWP of 23,900

Converting Between Carbon Dioxide Equivalents and Carbon Equivalents

The conversion between CO₂e and CE is directly related to the ratio of the atomic mass of a carbon dioxide molecule to the atomic mass of a carbon atom (44:12).

To convert from CE to CO₂e, multiply by 44/12

For example, 6 million metric tons of carbon equivalent (6 MMTCE) = 6 x (44/12) = 22 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent.
1 metric ton carbon equivalent = 3.667 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent.

To convert from CO₂e to CE, multiply by 12/44

For example, 11 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent = 11 x (12/44) = 3 million metric tons of carbon equivalent (3 MMTCE).
1 metric ton of CO₂ equivalent = 0.2727 metric tons of carbon equivalent.
