How Maqui-Carbon Credits work

Fundación Maquipucuna is part of the Slow Production Movement and hence we believe in the importance of Transparency, Simplicity and Consciousness when conducting business.

The money from your carbon credits directly support local Chocó Andean communities who have set aside thousands of hectares of protected forest on their land, rather than farming it or selling it for much-needed income. By buying the carbon credits, you also enable us plant trees in your name.  Maqui-Carbon Credits also support the Maquipucuna Foundation’s own 14,500 acre of protected cloudforest by funding the employment of local forest guards and enabling Maquipucuna to replant degraded rainforest areas.

Without the income from these ethical carbon credits, the forest would most inevitably be cut down, and all that carbon would be released as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. By buying Maqui-Carbon Credits, you help prevent global warming, save a piece of the rainforest, lift rainforest communities out of poverty, fund healthcare, education and basic needs.

The science and technology behind Maqui-Carbon Credits

We give you the guarantee that the carbon is measured according to the international standards set by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

Our scientists have established a Geographic Information System, where using the latest remotely sensed images, and barcode tree data generated in the field by local forest guards, the participant communities, we and Maqui-Carbon Credit buyers can monitor our project performance.

Maqui-Carbon Credits are additional

* Maqui-Carbon Credits only account for the carbon stored in the areas where we are avoiding deforestation in the most vulnerable forests of the Chocó Andean Corridor. At over a 3% deforestation rate, our region unfortunately has the highest impact of deforestation in the country.

* Maqui-Carbon Credits only account the carbon in the trees we are planting throughout the Chocó Andean Corridor with the contract to be nurtured and maintained for 20 years.

* Maqui-Carbon Credits are only accounted once.

* We would not be able to carry out these activities without the financing of the Maqui-Carbon Credits.

* The establishment of Maqui-Carbon Credits will not displace local communities to deforest in other places.

* Maqui-Carbon Credits will not lie to you.  We will not tell you that we will reduce the global demand for tropical timber, because we can’t. But who can guarantee that fossil fuels will no longer be used because of a single alternative energy project?
